Dark matter has been proposed by the scientific establishment as a solution to the inexplicably high velocities of stars within the disk of a spiral galaxy. However, dark matter itself proves to be equally inexplicable; after decades of searching, its nature remains unknown. Furthermore, the high stellar velocities themselves have never been fully explained. In this article, we propose an alternative interpretation of gravity, in which mass is quantified based on the extent to which it obstructs the view of the universe. This allows us to explain why a star gains velocity at the expense of the speed of stars orbiting closer to the galactic center. Using the Triangulum Galaxy as an example, we demonstrate that the calculated velocity is of the same order of magnitude as the observed velocities.
